Cal State LA Honors Distinguished Educators, Community Leaders

Cal State LA will honor nine educators and community leaders for their contributions to education during its annual Distinguished Educators Award Dinner on Friday, Nov. 13.

The Distinguished Educator Award will be presented to:

  • Ron Carruth, superintendent of the Whittier City School District (Whittier resident)
  • Latosha Guy, reading and language arts teacher at King/Drew Magnet High School of Medicine and Science and Cal State LA alumna (Gardena resident)
  • Lovelyn Marquez-Prueher, English and English Language Development teacher at Dodson Middle School and Cal State LA alumna (Torrance resident)
  • Kandice McLurkin, coordinator of the Standard English Learner/Academic English Mastery Program Office for the Los Angeles Unified School District and Cal State LA alumna (Los Angeles resident)
  • Caprice Young, CEO and superintendent of Magnolia Science Academies (L.A. resident)

The Distinguished Community Service Award will be presented to:

  • Fidel Vargas, president and CEO of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (L.A. resident)
  • Linda Wah, Board of Trustees for Pasadena City College and Cal State LA alumna (Rosemead resident)

The Distinguished Service Award will be presented to:

  • Janet C. Fisher-Hoult, emerita professor in education at Cal State LA and the first Poet Laureate of Culver City (Culver City resident)
  • Sandy Sugiura, administrative analyst specialist in the Charter College of Education Office for Student Services here at Cal State LA (Montebello resident)

The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Charter College of Education at Cal State LA and will be held at the University’s Golden Eagle Ballroom. A reception and silent auction begins at 5 p.m. and will be followed by a dinner program at 6 p.m.

The Friends of the Charter College of Education includes alumni, educators and community members who support scholarships for students in Cal State LA’s teacher-preparation and school administrator programs and other activities. All proceeds from the awards dinner will support the Friends’ Scholarship Endowment and Faculty Development funds.
